- Ship with skill
- At least 1 Production skill (Casting, Handicrafts, Sewing, Cooking or Storage)
- At least one recipe book (you need to use it at sea)
Note: There is a rumor that R15 management skill reduces coal fuel consumption (When other conditions are met).
Step 1: Make sure you meet the requirements above
You can't grind management without the management skill, right? Sounds obvious but some people skip this step and go straight to normal production skill grinding...
How do I know if my ship has a ship skill?
Check your ship information for skill left from the "improved performance" button.
The ship above (MFCV) does not have a ship skill
This ETC has a ship skill (look for the arrow up next to the button I told you about)
- Hint 1: No ship bought straight from the shipyard master has a ship skill.
- Hint 2: Your school ship will likely have a ship skill.

Step 2: Put an aide in the paymaster job
This will increase great success. Proficiency is obtained from great success not normal production.
Step 3: Get raw materials aboard your ship and set sail
Yes you have to be sailing (moving) to get proficiency for management skill.
Your other production skills will rank up regardless of whether your ship is moving or not, so don't be mislead by that.
Step 4: Use your production skill while sailing
Higher management skill ranks will require higher rank recipes.
For example, when you get rank 3 in management your R1 recipes will stop working, even if you get a great success.
How to grind management faster
Tip 1: Grind management while grinding your production skill
Don't wait to have your production skills maxed and refined to start.
You will likely get rank 7 or 8 of management when you finish your favorite production skill grinding. And you didn't even have to worry about it.
Tip 2: Put on the steam engineer job
Steam engineer has management skill favored so you will grind twice as fast.
It also has Casting, Wares Trading and Mineral Trading as favored, thus making it an excellent job to grind Casting and management.

Tip 3: Great grinding spots
- Casting: Hamburg and Lubeck (Metal smelting book and alloy metal book)
- Handicrafts: Bordeaux (Sherry recipe) or Oslo-Bergen (Statue recipe)
- Cooking; Porto (Seafood pizza recipe)
- Fishers/storage: Syracuse Tuna, Swordfish and Mako shark.
- Sewing: Oslo (Lace Recipe) in Europe or India (see sewing grinding guide). Making clothes from Wool works well in lower ranks.
Tip 4: Oxford Skills
Equip "Increase Production Success Rate" 4, 3, 2 and 1 (if possible). They give more great success which in turn gives more proficiency.
Tip 5: More ship skills = more proficiency
I tested it myself with and my management skill R11 and 2 ships:
- Ship 1: Custom Cargo Clipper (CCC) 3 skills (Wind-resistant mast, Emergency acceleration amd floatsam search)
- Ship 2 : Trading Large Galleon (TLG) 1 skill (Casting Net)
Recipe 1: Tuna storage (R8 recipe)
CCC gave me 3 proficiency points and TLG gave me only 2 per great success.Recipe 2: Swordfish storage (R14 recipe)
CCC gave me 8 proficiency points and TLG gave me only 5 per great success.Recipe 2: Mako fish storage (R14 recipe)
CCC gave me 7 proficiency points and TLG gave me only 5 per great success.Conclusions:
- As expected normal production does not give experience (even with higher level recipes).
- Higher level recipes gives more experience.
- More installed ship skills will give you more proficiency per great success.
Notes:
- All other variables were kept the same (like oxford skills, aide on paymaster etc...)
