This is a question that is often asked but the answer people give is rarely accurate.
Ship speed depends in several factors including environments factors like wind and current direction.
I talk about how to increase your ship's speed in this article.
Comparing Base Speed
But taking all of those external factors away and comparing raw status can still lead us to error.
There are subtle differences in sail speed thanks to vertical and horizontal sail, armour, turn speed, wave resistance, cargo and row power.
There are differences when you compare fully upgraded (modded) ships between themselves and not upgraded ships (also between themselves).
Also, row ships have the advantage of the row power that is not affected by wind.
That's why it is not uncommon to have a ship that the crowd say its faster under-perform in direct competition.
If you are looking for a clue, if the ship has a "Superior" or "Pirate" in its name than it is probably the fastest ship of its kind.
And there is constant introduction of new ship classes to the game, that completely changes the rank from time to time.
That's one of the reasons I created UST, to give people a better, objective approach to base or total ship speed. If you are interested follow the link to learn more.
Note: It's funny to see fast ships being sold for pennies (like shipbuilding mat ships) and see those allegedly high end / fast ships being sold for dozens of CTs (Captain tickets). People just don't know the real value and are regularly scammed by spot trade alts that give fake PCs (price checks). Be careful.
