Sea charting is a game mechanics that is (or can be) fun. Instead of automatically charting wherever you go, you actually have to earn it by completing certain tasks.
Benefits from Sea Charting
- Adventure experience and fame for each sea region investigated.
- Random bonus like vigour increase, fatigue decrease and disaster removal.
- Disasters less frequent (Rats. fire, ice...).
- You get access to detailed information like wind, current, what is sold in town, check discounts ...
- Items given by Mercator when a set of regions are completed.
Unconfirmed benefits
- NPC attacks less frequent (Both ambush and visible)
- Less "fails" from fishing, procurement and collecting at sea.
- Increased ship speed (Or acceleration).
Requirements
- East Asia Port Permit
Note: School graduation is no longer a requirement.
Skills
Recognition
Required to investigate coordinates.
Surveying
Required to find the coordinates where you need to use recognition.
Fishing (Recommended)
Needed for secondary tasks investigations.
Repair (Recommended)
The Northern Passage has lots of ice floating around that deals a lot of damage. You won't make it without lots of lumber and the repair skill.
Talk to Mercator
You need to be invited by Mercator, an NPC that lives in Amsterdam. This happens when you dock at your capital after getting the East Asia port permit.
He will give you the storyline to map the North Sea.
The first sea to chart (North Sea) works like a tutorial.
How to do Sea Charting
After Mercator gave you the north sea mapping job, you will already have it selected. This is how you do it in further investigations:
- Hit "m" in your keyboard or JOURNAL > CHARTS to find your map.
- Choose "North Sea" in the change dropdown (right). The left one should say "Northern Europe".
- Click the "research" button.
- Choose tasks and complete them until you reach 100% map completion. (More details below)
After you complete a sea region investigation you must go back to your map to earn the XP and fame (Hit "m").
Note: After you complete the north sea you can chart almost any region of the world at any order you like. The exceptions are shown below.
Tasks
So these are the tasks available to be completed:1st North Sea example |
In the example above just sail to the coordinates given (Use the survey skill to know) and use the recognition skill when you get to the spot.
Note: It doesn't need to be the exact spot. Somewhere between +/- 30 points should work too.
Tasks in red are mandatory, the white ones are optional and blues are the ones you have already completed.
Other possible tasks are:
- Fishing
- Sailing X days
- Sinking NPC ships
- Trading in towns in the region (You have to make a profit)
- Making a discovery at sea
- Raising a shipwreck
Sea regions tasks are self explanatory so I won't dive deeper.
