Did you know you can actually mine valuable stuff in UWO?
This message is from an event known as "Gold Rush" (Part of the NA Schedule).
"Digging for gold nuggets in the North America West Coast landing area becomes popular."
In this event your chances of getting gold are greatly increased.
But you can mine any day you want!
Benefits from mining
- You can exchange your large gold nugged (and gem) with an item from the store.
Large gold nugged is known to be traded for a Large Storm Sail.

LSS has devalued in price since the introduction of Cultural Investment but it is still very valuable.
- Some memorial items may only be obtainable from the shop NPCs.
- You may compete with other players (Ranking).

Access Guide (Gold Rush Storyline)
Basically you need to have unlocked San Francisco. Quick recap:
After that just return to the landing point "North America West Coast" and you will be greeted by an NPC with a mini tutorial. You also need to complete this storyline to access the gem appraiser in Luanda.
How to mine
- Go to the mining area North America West Coast Landing (Gold) or Cape Town outskirts (Gems).
- Activate your survey skill to find the best spots (Red is the best and gray the worst). Example below in the tips section.
- Go to a mining spot (Pickaxe symbol).
- Activate your search skill.
Eventually you will earn a few gold nuggets (Trade good) and a large gold nugget (North America).
You can get gems (normal trade goods) and large gemstones (Cannot carry a large and gem at the same time) in Kimberly Mine.
Of course there are "fortune times" and "fever times" where you get more gold nuggets.
Appraisal
Once you are full, you have to go to the the appraiser to get your reward.
San Francisco (Gold)
He will give you ducats for your gold nuggets:
And weigh your large gold nugget:
You may later choose to trade it for some item in the same NPC.

Luanda (Gems)
Gems are appraised at Luanda.
Normal gems will give you ducats in return while large gemstone may used to trade for an item. The heavier is the best.
Important: If you have handicrafts skill rank 10 or above you may produce rare stuff at Luanda. Some of this stuff is used in a recipe at Alexandria's Alchemist daughter NPC recipes.
Tips & Tricks
Fever time
- Equip a ship with large cargo, like clermonts.
- Clean your inventory. Sometimes you will get junk items and stuff people dropped around.
- You can only carry one large gold nugget at a time.
- You cannot carry a large gold nugget and a gemstone (From Kimberly mine) at the same time.
- The item you can exchange are updated every monday at midnight (Server time).
- You can buy axes in San Francisco shop to increase your chances (It may be expensive though). There is a premium consumable called Experienced Miners Pickaxe that boosts your chances even further.
- If you are serious about this business you can also use the "Golden Dreamer" title.
- There is a special day during the North American cycle you can get a free large gold nugget from the cheerful miner NPC in Boston.
