I've already written about "the feature I miss most on UWO" so now I would like to write about what I dislike the most.
Disclaimer: This is not a review. I am completely biased to write a full review. Yes I have so many good things to say about the game (Maybe I like it too much). Besides there are other people who made good reviews about the game and it is my editorial choice to not reinvent the wheel when others have done it well already (So I just share it).
Alright... without further ado, the thing I dislike most is politics.
And I'm not talking about real world (government) politics. It's people trying to enforce their wishes / desires / beliefs on others that annoys me the most.
It's not common, it's not everybody. In fact, it's just a small minority that has this bad habit of politicizing everything.
But when they do show up, oh boy! How annoying!
It is always about self benefit by hurting someone else. So I will give a few examples:
Changing the game
Some want to change the game to benefit their own play style. It can be a buff on something or nerf on something else.
While there may be game imbalances added over time it is not usually the case. So changing the game is usually detrimental to balance and therefore will hurt the majority of players.
Changing the rules
An example is trying to change the multiboxing rules.
There is a legendary player that would literally get into every discussion to blame multiboxers. He would also threat to quit the game every time if Papaya or Koei did not ban multiboxing.
And the point here is not about being in favor or against of multiboxing. It's certainly a valid debate and there are reasonable arguments for both sides.
The point I want to make here is the attitude. These keyboard warriors won't add to any discussion.
They will attack any person (and not just ideas) to enforce their own policy.
Resellers
Reselling is not against the game's rules but some people think it is. They don't care about reading the rules, the only thing they care about is how they feel about reselling.
If they FEEL it is wrong then it must be forbidden for everybody. Like the multiboxing guy above, they will literally blame the resellers for everything.
I explain why reselling exists and what could be done to "solve it". But haters want to hate (not "solve it"), so it is a waste of time to discuss with these people.
Inflation
In the previous examples people would take what they don't like and accuse it of everything.
With inflation it is quite the opposite, they will use inflation as an argument for everything they want to accomplish (Or change).
Example: I once heard a guy make the point that buffing the pirates would fight inflation.
It is funny but every time I see an argument about inflation I can tell the person doesn't know what inflation is (Or its causes).
I recall people making arguments in favor of THE GREAT WIPE of 2017.
"It is necessary to fix the economy" - They would argue. And my reaction would be "wait... WHAT???"
I still fear people will come out of the dark and ask for another wipe.
Framing other people
I never imagined there would be people out there that would lie to get what they want. Well, it turns out there is.
In a particular case (Shipbuilding upgrade), the client accused the shipbuilder of stealing his ship.
Note: By all means it is something that can happen so be sure to trust the shipbuilder before handing over your valuable ship.
In this case the "client" (Or should I say scammer?) would mass spread his case to everyone willing to listen. Both in and outside the game.
In the world of mass communications, gossips spread like wildfire. And so did the conviction by the masses.
Long story short:
The shipbuilder's reputation was stained. A ticket was issued to look into his side of the case and he was later found "not guilt". If I recall correctly the client did not agree on the shipbuilding upgrades' price after it was already done. And threatened the shipbuilder to press charges of ship stealing / scamming if he (Shipbuilder) did not do what he (Client) wanted. Nevertheless, months after the shipbuilder's clearance he was still recognize (as a scammer) by other players who knew of the story (He eventually left the game or changed character).
Appearances can be deceptive. Always hear both sides before judging.
Price wars
People love to talk about the price of stuff. It is easy to spot one... and I go "Oh no, not another price war".
But there are two particular kind of peoples that can get very political: The "free" players (Those that will play for years and never contribute with any real world money to the host) and the resellers.
They want to increase (or decrease) the perceived value of some item.
Some will use shady tactics like fake "price checks" answered by his own alts.
Some will go into heated debates about why the price should be "X" or "Z". Usually with the help of fallacies.
Note 1: The "right price" is the price that both the seller and buyer agrees on. No coercion is need. If the buyer / seller doesn't agree on your price, don't close the deal and move on with your life.
Note 2: If the agreed price is reached with the help shady tactics then that is scam.
Price wars are just a great waste of time. Tip: How to make money in uwo.
Wrapping it up
I gave a few examples, but there are others. The point I am making here is that I really dislike when people try to enforce their wishes / desires / beliefs on others. I get twice more annoyed when they don't know what they are talking about, and twice more angry when it is just a scam attempt.
Words of advice (For the small minority who need it):
- Consent is key for peaceful human interaction. Don't force others to do what you want for your own benefit. A win-win (Or no deal) is something that does not need to be forced.
- If you don't like it, don't do it. You don't need to forbid everybody else from doing it. Example: If you don't like the game, just leave (There are many others). If you don't agree with this website, don't read / use it (There are many others). If you are a vegetarian, don't eat meat in a carnivorous country. Doing what you don't like or don't agree just makes you a hypocritical.
- Do not use deception techniques to modify other's opinions about what you don't like / don't agree. Just to be clear: Trying to manipulate other people is scamming.
- When trying to make a point do not use fallacies to win. Separate the facts from your opinion.
- If you believe in something it doesn't mean that it is true. If you feel something is wrong it doesn't mean it is. There may be more than one right (Or wrong) answer and your beliefs (And feelings) are only applicable to you. Respecting other people's beliefs is an act of politeness and tolerance.
- As a general advice I would say think if your action will hurt other people, before doing it. That wipe certainly did me harm.
I would like to finish with Monty Python's advice (meaning of life film):
